How do I deal with a positive AML result?

What to do when a verification gets flagged for review due to an AML database hit

Sometimes, a user’s identity verification will be paused and flagged for manual review.

This can happen when there is a match higher than your set sensitivity in an anti-money laundering database.

This doesn’t always mean the user has done something wrong, but it does mean you should do extra checks before they can use your service.

What this means

When there's a high match on an AML list, Vouchsafe doesn't automatically approve or reject the user. Instead:

  • The case is marked "needs review" and you will get an admin email notification

  • The user is told they may need to verify themselves another way

What you need to do

To move forward, you should collect additional evidence from the user to make sure they are not the same entity that has been flagged.

For example, if the entity is a US citizen, you could collect proof of UK citizenship instead.

This helps meet enhanced due diligence (EDD) requirements, as recommended by AML regulations.

You can do this by setting up a separate EDD verification flow in Vouchsafe to ask for extra supporting documents. For example, you might ask for:

  • Further photo ID

  • A number of utility bills or bank statement

  • A vouch from a professional referee

You can create a new flow from your Flows tab, or edit an existing one to include these steps.
